The Olympic Games Leave a Hole
The 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea have come to a close. After faithfully watching the Games on TV for the past 16 days, last night I felt a sort of emptiness. The Olympic Games give us the opportunity to watch all of these unique sports that we've never seldom or never seen before, and to beam with our best Canadian pride. The Olympic Games opens the window to see into the dreams of each Olympian. Every night I have turned on the TV to see what sport I get to watch, and to witness who's dream will come alive. Of course, the Olympic Games can dash the dreams for those hoping for gold, but who are beat-out by other dreamers.
Canada had their best-ever medal finish at these Games. It's not always the medals that make me proud to be Canadian, but the stories of sacrifice, effort, and triumph. For sixteen days I have been comforted by good citizenship, and comraderie shown across all nations. Even when our world is going through tough times, and countries don't seem to be getting along, the Olympic Games bring peace and understanding to people across all nations.
When all is said and done, the Olympic games always come to an end. The routine of sitting down to cheer on athletes comes to a close, and the stories of these amazing athletes come to a stop. When the Olympic Games end, they leave a hole. For now, I will sit an wait. The good news is, the Summer Olympic Games will roll around in two years. That is a whole lot better than waiting the four years it will take for my favourite Winter Olympic Games to return.
How do you feel about the Olympic Games?
